Looking for a memorable and thrilling haunt to go to this season? If you dare, try the haunted cornfield and the flashlight corn maze at Connors Farm in Danvers.
“While waiting in line, I boasted to my friends that I probably wouldn't scream or anything. Not only did I scream a lot, but there were also moments I was clinging to friends,” said Julie B. from Boston.
The haunted cornfield is a walk through attraction. As you enter the path, you are surrounded by 8 ft. high cornstalks and total darkness. As all your senses kick in to high alert, you realize throughout this one venue you will encounter three different themes.
“The Haunted Maze was excellent. It was a path, with a couple of little turn-a-rounds, but nothing that will get you lost. The costumes and decorations were great. I can tell they put a lot of time and money into the whole thing,” said Lauren D. from Boston.
The first theme is the Haunted Cornfield. According to Connors Farm’s haunted cornfield website, “In the early 1940’s, a farmer with a dark side began harvesting a new crop: ‘dead people’.”
The second theme is called the Asylum Burial Grounds. This theme is described on the website as a mental institution that began to overcrowd severely in the 1900’s. “Sources claim that in order to keep the hospital population down, the most criminally insane patients were ‘accidentally murdered’ by the practice of primitive shock therapy and lobotomies.” Many of these patients are known to be seen lurking in the shadows of the cornfield.
The third theme to run into in this haunt is the Woods of Horror. This section of the cornfield will come with clowns. The legend of this part, according to the website, is that the clowns haunt the woods that their bus overturned in on the way to a fair.
J.A. from Everett said, “My husband and I really appreciated how they intentionally space people out so that you get the actual scary experience of walking through the dark corn maze and have the various creepy creatures crawl out and give you a nice scare throughout instead of scaring the blob of people in front of you. This maze blew Spooky World and Nightmare New England's haunted houses out of the water. I’d recommend it for sure.”
This year’s corn maze is themed “Welcome to the Jungle.” From the aerial view photograph of the maze, you can see the text written out amongst the corn along with a lion, monkey, elephant, and giraffes head. This maze can take people anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours to complete. The 2012 theme was “Witches of Salem.” Before that other memorable themes were “The Scarecrow,” “Family Guy,” and “Clint Eastwood.” At night you are required to bring your own flashlight to help you navigate through the maze.
“The big lure for me was the corn maze. And it's probably the most fun I've had since I was like 6. The maze is huge and there are a few wooden bridges along the way if you need to get your head out of the corn stalks and actually try to figure out how to get out,” said Lisa C. from Waltham.
In 2011, Connors Farm got a lot of publicity for the couple that made the 911 call from inside the maze claiming they were lost. According to NBC news report, the couple, and their two young children, was actually 25-feet from completing the maze. It took the police and their tracking dog less than a minute to find them.
In the audio of the police call that was released to the news, the lost woman said, “We thought this would be fun. Instead it's a nightmare. I don't know what made us do this. It was daytime when we came in. And I never take my daughter out. This is the first time. Never again.”
The couple was with their three week old baby and other young child in the 7-acre maze. Their story instantly went viral across news stations all around the United States. This extra publicity did no harm for Connors Farm.
At the time farm owner, Bob Connors said, “I have a funny feeling it's going to be a real busy season.”
Connors’s funny feeling was true. Mariel T. of Boston said, “When I heard this maze drove someone to call 911, I decided I had to go! I would definitely recommend going at night time and towards the beginning of the season. The corn was broken and the ground was a soggy muddy mess when I went the day before Halloween. Despite that, it was fun and we found our way out within 5 minutes.”
Connors Farm has added a new attraction this year called Zombie Safari Paintball. This is where you can test your zombie hunting skills and see if you can survive. According to the farms website, the zombies will be after brains in this apocalypse themed haunt.
On Facebook Connors Farm said, “You cannot bring your own paintball gun, we provide the guns with a specific pressure setting, and they are attached to the paintball trailer that you ride in. The guns have enough range of motion to aim up and down and side to side, but you cannot turn the gun on another customer on the trailer with you, only the zombies!”
With the new attraction being added this year, Connors Farm should maintain and receive even more praise for being a great haunt. Anyone looking for a fun night in a local area should go if they dare to brave the scares! Connors Farm is located on 30 Valley Rd. in Danvers. Visit www.connorsfarm.com for more information. Connors Farm will provide you with enough spirit for this Halloween season!
